Pigment Dye
The Look and Feel of Pigment-Dyed Garments
Pigment-dyed clothes tend to have a softer and more relaxed look compared to traditionally dyed garments. The colors often appear slightly faded, and the fabric can feel more supple and vintage. Pigment dyes create a smooth, almost matte finish, which enhances the garment’s subtle texture. Some pigment-dyed garments also have a slightly "chalky" or "washed-out" appearance, contributing to the overall aesthetic of casual coolness that is so favored in streetwear.
The Process
Pigment dyeing gives fabric a soft, vintage look. The process starts with pre-washing to remove residues. Pigments are applied to the fabric’s surface instead of bonding with fibers. A binder helps the pigments adhere properly. Heat-setting locks in the color for durability. The fabric then goes through a final wash to soften it. This creates a worn-in, lived-in feel. Pigment dyeing results in rich, faded tones. The colors have a slightly distressed, textured look. It’s perfect for achieving a unique, vintage aesthetic.
